"There is no one on earth more deserving of help than a good dog who has given its heart and soul to its family and then lost its home." — Annie Simon

Special Dogs in Permanent Foster Care

Paris Lola Jasper Amber Minzy

The CCRT believes every dog deserves our support, care and attention.

Volunteers with the CCRT love nothing more than to bring a dog to his or her new 'forever home' and know that we have made a difference in both the dog and their new families life. Those happy endings keep us motivated to continue our animal rescue efforts in the hopes that a time will come when groups such as our are no longer needed.

Occasionally, dogs come into our care and we know that we will never be able to place them into permanent homes. They are often dumped in shelters, SPCA's or turned over to the CCRT as their owners are unable or unwilling to take care of them. These dogs are very ill and/or old, have special needs or require extensive and expensive surgery. We know that they will require the commitment of the CCRT for a very long time and we sometimes make the decision to keep them in our care for the rest of their lives.

These special dogs are placed in permanent foster care with a loving CCRT volunteer and their family. The CCRT pays for all medical treatment including vet visits, medicine and any necessary surgery the dog will need for the rest of it's life. The foster home also takes on the added burden of knowing this dog will be with them until it is their time to go to the "Rainbow Bridge."

Needless to say, the medical costs associated with these dogs are usually very high as many of them require ongoing care and medication for several years. These dogs put a serious financial strain on the CCRT and we need your help to allow us to keep tending to these very special pets. A donation to the CCRT gives us the flexibility to continue caring for all dogs that come into our rescue group - the young, old, healthy or ailing.

Paris is an example of dog that is in permanent foster care (see her story below). Even though many people would have originally given up on her, the CCRT believes in doing everything possible to keep our rescues happy, healthy and safe - all while maintaining a high quality of life. The CCRT has accomplished that with Paris, as we have with dogs before her and dogs to come.

The CCRT will continue to rescue dogs like Paris and are committed to doing everything we can to alleviate their pain and give them a quiet and loving home that they may live out the rest of their years. Please consider a donation to the "Every Penny* Counts" fund and help make a special dog's life healthier and more comfortable.

* Penny was a CCRT rescue that came to the CCRT in 2004. She wasn't expected to live very long but, thanks to her foster mom and supporters, the CCRT was able to help Penny live a happy and healthy life in permanent foster care, until she passed away in late 2005.

Because we believe that every Penny counts...

Jasper

Location: Kingston, ON
Age: 15
Gender: male

Meet Jasper, a very special CCRT foster dog.

Jasper is a long haired black who was surrendered to CCRT in early 2006 when his mom became too sick to care for him. Unfortunately, this was the 3rd time that Jasper had come through the CCRT and we want nothing more than to see him happy and stable so he can live out his remaining few years. Jasper had been surrendered with his constant female companion, Chloe, who passed away in February 2009 at the ripe old age of almost 19.

Since he came back to CCRT, his foster family has worked hard to ensure he is as happy and healthy as possible. Jasper has slimmed down, his mobility has improved because of it and he can go down stairs and is jumping up on the couch. He could not be termed overactive, but does enjoy his walks and time outside. Jasper spends a lot of time sleeping but once he wakes up, he gets very excited when his people come home. He loves nothing more than hanging out on the couch with whoever happens to be handy - he really isn't picky. Adult, child, guest - it doesn't matter.

Overall his health is as good as can be expected. Jasper's heart murmur has not been evident in the time he's been back with CCRT. Daily medication and exercise seem to be doing the trick. With Chloe's recent passing, Jasper's foster family is keeping a close eye on him to ensure he isn't too lost without his girlfriend. Fortunately, Jasper is in great hands and CCRT has no doubt he will be loved and spoiled for the rest of his life.

CCRT will pay for his medical needs while he is with us and we'll continue to do so until he passes onto Rainbow Bridge. If you would like to help us with Jasper's care, please become a Sponsorship Angel today and your donation will be directed to his veterinary needs.

Amber

Location: Hamilton, ON
Age: 9 years old
Gender: Female

This lovely lady is Amber, who came to CCRT in July 2006 after being found wandering the streets of Toronto. She was picked up by Toronto Animal Services and surrendered to us. Amber is approximately 10 years old and weighs 8 pounds. CCRT suspects she was used as a breeding dog and was perhaps discarded after her former owners were finished with her.

Considering her possibly sad background, Amber is loving, calm, playful, spirited, brave, social, curious, obedient and intelligent. She bonded immediately with the female of the foster household and will follow her everywhere. Whatever you want Amber to do, she wants to do it to please you. She is, however, no push over especially if she is frightened.

Because she is obedient and intelligent, her foster family has found it incredibly easy to train her. Once she knows the routine of the household she does what she should. She is eager to please and responds well to training with food.

On top of all of her wonderful qualities, Amber is also able to make herself disappear. One moment she is there on the floor, the next, presto-chango (and a bit of wriggling), Amber is gone and in her place & ta-dah - an ordinary pile of blankets! Amber has some medical issues that require care and monitoring. The most serious is her enlarged heart and a heart murmur. She takes a Vetmedin pill twice a day for her heart ailments and it would appear to be doing her a great deal of good. Amber is also very hard of hearing. She can hear loud claps or bangs and looks up immediately to see what is required. Her foster family has been teaching her hand signals to which she responds and obeys immediately.

Due to the seriousness of her medical condition, Amber will remain in permanent foster care with CCRT until she is ready to go to 'Rainbow Bridge'. We may not know the length of her days but we do know that every day she is with her permanent foster family, this wonderful little dog brings them laughter, serene company and joyous kisses.

The CCRT will continue to pay for Amber's medical care and she would sincerely appreciate it if you could help CCRT help her by becoming one of her special Sponsorship Angels. The money you donate to her care will be used for future vet visits and necessary medicine to keep this gal happy and as healthy as possible.

Lola

LolaLola was surrendered to CCRT in March 2008 and unfortunately, she is a very sick little girl.

She is only 4 years old and weighs a mere 3 pounds but she is fighting for her life right now. Lola began having multiple petit mal seizures every day and the vet suspected she may have a liver problem. We had the vet take an ammonia blood level (which came back high) as well as a liver biopsy. The biopsy showed that her liver is atrophied (ie very crumbly) and her internal organs are not in good shape. The biopsy can't be more specific, it just shows that Lola has a big problem. As antibiotics and most medications metabolise in the liver, this creates even more of an issue, but the vet has prescribed a few things to help her.

Lola has her good days when she eats well, drinks lots of water and is very happy go lucky. Her bad days, however, see her not eating or drinking, having many siezures and throwing up so much that she keeps losing weight. Lola's foster family says while she is very ill, she is a very quiet, well behaved girl who always wants to be cuddled and stroked - which they are happy to do.

Lola is not expected to live very long; the vet says she could be with us for a few weeks, perhaps a few months or even a year, but there is no way to predict this. Because her liver isn't functioning, her system and internal organs are being poisoned by toxins. Fortunately, Loal is not in any pain, but she is not in good physical condition.

CCRT wants to treat and care for her as best we can to make her remaining time as healthy and happy as possible. Your financial support for this special girl will allow us to provide her the care she so deserves. Please become a Sponsorship Angel for Lola, our very special angel girl.

Please note that no adoption applications will be accepted for Lola. She is not available for adoption.

Minzy

This loving beautiful girl is Minzy. She was surrendered to CCRT from a shelter because she was extremely stressed within the shelter environment. She is spayed, up-to-date with shots, micro-chipped, vet-checked and weights between six and seven pounds.

She is very frightened and startles easily. Currently, she watches but does not participate with people or other fur friends, although she is beginning to venture out from her safe place, which is  her favourite basket. She loves to snuggle in bed under the covers. Minzy is  an extremely emotionally fragile little girl .She is safely ensconced in her foster home and will remain there on a permanent basis. No more moves for Minzy!

Applications are not being accepted for Minzy.

Please consider purchasing a sweater and/or blanket for Minzy, or becoming her Sponsorship Angel by making a cash donation towards her care.
